Cholesterol Drug Information

Cholesterol is naturally found in the cells of all animals, including humans. It supports cell function, however high levels of cholesterol in the blood can cause serious side effects. Several medications have become available to reduce cholesterol, including statins, fibrates, resins and nicotinic acid. Statins have been linked to a potentially fatal condition called rhabdomyolysis, or severe muscle damage that can result in skeletal damage or even death. Symtpoms of rhabdomyolysis include muscle pain, weakness or tenderness, malaise, fever, dark colored urine, nausea and / or vomiting. Rhabdomyolysis is more common in higher doses of Simvastatin, Zocor, Vytorin, Crestor and Baycol. Individuals are advised to contact their doctor immediately if they experience any of these symptoms.

Some cholesterol drugs, such as Vytorin and Zetia, have been a source of controversy as many studies have claimed the drugs are not as effective as advertised. Furthermore, many statins have also been linked to liver damage and other serious side effects.
